Gypsy was waiting when Miss Egan, Savannah’s caseworker, brought the child into Jal’s office at the Hope Street Clinic on Friday. It wasn’t time for her monthly check-up, but Savannah had a persistent cough, and the house mother at the Creekside Orphanage had requested a doctor’s visit.

A huge smile lit the little one’s face when she entered the office. She pulled away from the caseworker’s grasp and threw her arms around Gypsy.

For a second, Gypsy froze, but then her hands reached for the child all on their own, with no prompting from her startled mind. Waves of pleasure washed over her as she snuggled the little girl close…along with sharp stabs of longing that, at first, she didn’t understand.

Savannah raised her sweet little face and gave Gypsy a huge, adoring grin. And Gypsy knew.

Pulling the child into her arms, she sank into the nearest chair, overwhelmed by a sudden, intense desire to be a mother. Savannah’s mother.

Jal spoke with Miss Egan for a few moments, then bid her good-bye, saying Savannah would be ready to go in an hour. When the woman was gone, he crossed the room and grinned.

“Well, look at this. I bring a pretty lady with me, and she gets all the attention!”

Savannah raised her head to smile at Jal, but didn’t loosen her hold on Gypsy. Jal pulled up a chair and sat next to them.

“So, how am I going to look in your ears and up your nose with you two all wrapped up like that?” He chuckled and reached out to tug on a strand of the child’s hair. “You wouldn’t want me to accidentally look in Gypsy’s ear, would you?”

Savannah giggled, and Gypsy found herself smiling along with the little girl.

Jal certainly had a way with children. It didn’t require a lot of imagination to see him as a father.

But she didn’t want to think too far along those lines.

“Come, darling, let’s get you turned around here so Dr. J can examine you.” She felt a little self-conscious using the nickname, but he had told her that most of his young patients referred to him as Dr. J. Apparently the pronunciation of his name could be quite a mouthful for a child.

She noticed Jal pulling his stethoscope from his pocket.

“Uh-oh. I think he wants to see if you still have a heart.”

“I do!” The little voice was barely above a whisper.

Gypsy’s gaze flew to Jal’s. Savannah had spoken—to Gypsy. Surely this was progress!

Jal nodded, but made no comment. Gypsy followed his lead, acknowledging her excitement only by giving the little girl an extra squeeze.

“Well, why don’t you let Dr. J see for himself?” She set the little girl’s feet on the floor and gently extricated herself from the tiny hands. “I think he’s a little worried about that.”

Jal held out a hand, and Savannah dashed the few steps to where he waited. He swung her onto an examination table and pointed his stethoscope at her forehead. “OK. Let’s see if your heart is beating.
